Physical vs Chemical Sun filters — What’s the difference?
Physical sun protection (mineral-based)
Physical sun filters are based on natural minerals, such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. In the sun protection from MARIA ÅKERBERG, we use Zinc Oxide. These minerals remain on the skin's surface and reflect away the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Since the filter does not penetrate the skin, it is very skin-friendly and safe even for small children. Mineral filters are neither hormone-disrupting nor allergenic and do no harm when they enter the oceans or nature. Mineral-based sun filters are photostable and do not break down in sunlight in the same way as chemical UV filters.
Chemical sun filters
Chemical filters function by absorbing UV rays into the skin and converting them into heat. These filters oxidise within the skin and can accumulate in the body over time. They are suspected of having harmful effects on both human health and marine life. In addition, chemical filters break down more quickly in sunlight, meaning they often require more frequent reapplication.

Sun Stick SPF 50+
