Small bumps on your upper arms or thighs? It could be keratosis pilaris – a common and harmless skin condition that causes the skin to become dry and rough. With regular exfoliation and moisturising, you can help the skin feel softer and smoother.
What is keratosis pilaris?
Keratosis pilaris, sometimes also known as ‘chicken skin’, is a common skin condition that mainly appears on the outer upper arms and thighs but can also occur on areas such as the buttocks and cheeks. It often develops during childhood and is common among teenagers and young adults.
The small, raised bumps, which can resemble pronounced goosebumps, occur when keratin – a protein naturally found in the skin – builds up and forms small plugs in the openings of the hair follicles. This results in the characteristic rough and sometimes slightly red skin.
Why do you get keratosis pilaris?
The exact cause of keratosis pilaris is still unclear, but genetics play a major role. The condition is also more common in people with dry skin and atopic eczema.
Keratosis pilaris can become more noticeable during the winter months when humidity levels drop and the skin is more prone to becoming dehydrated.

Keratosis pilaris on the body
Keratosis pilaris är vanligast på överarmar och lår, där regelbunden exfoliering och återfuktning kan hjälpa till att hålla huden mjuk och jämn.
Exfoliera med AHA-syra
Cream Scrub Energy provides a double acting exfoliation with fermented Lactic Acid (AHA) and beads from Apricot Kernel. The combination helps remove dead skin cells and smooth dry, rough skin. Use 1–2 times a week and let the exfoliator do the work without scrubbing too hard.
Du kan även använda AHA & Jojoba Peeling på kroppen. Den kombinerar fermenterad Mjölksyra (AHA) med fina korn av Jojobavax och passar bra på mindre områden där huden känns extra sträv.
Moisturise daily with Body Lotion
Tip for extra-dry skin! During the winter months, or when your skin feels particularly dry and rough, you can complement your routine with Body Balm. The water-free formula provides an extra protective and emollient layer that helps the skin bind moisture.

Things to keep in mind with keratosis pilaris
Avoid drying cleansers
Strong soaps and cleansing products can dry out the skin and make the rough feeling more noticeable. Choose a mild, sulphate-free shower gel and facial cleanser.
Avoid hot showers
Long, hot showers and baths can dry out the skin. Instead, use lukewarm water and make sure to moisturise your skin immediately afterwards.
Avoid excessive exfoliation, squeezing and picking
Harsh exfoliation, squeezing and picking at the skin can cause irritation and make redness more noticeable.
Be gentle when shaving and removing hair
Shaving and waxing can irritate already bumpy skin. Be gentle and avoid shaving irritated skin.

Can keratosis pilaris disappear?
Keratosis pilaris can become less noticeable with age, but there is no skincare product that can permanently remove the condition. However, a consistent routine with gentle exfoliation and moisturisation can help alleviate symptoms and improve the way the skin feels and looks.
